SIGNUM HR Inspection of Syringes

For a project in the US, the presence of the plunger and the package insert of syringes was to be inspected. For packaging identification, the pharmacode is read with SIGNUM HR.

However, inspecting the transparent plunger poses a challenge to vision systems. Using greyscale values for evaluation is not possible since the lamellas can point in any direction within a 360° radius. This results in a large variety of reflexive patterns, rendering the usual evaluation unsuitable.

The solution came in an algorithm for edge detection which evaluates the greyscale values in the area of the plunger to determine edges. If the edges within the plunger area correspond to the expected and set threshold, its presence can be ascertained. Thus, the application was successfully fulfilled utilising SIGNUM HR.
